Number of 4G base stations in Belarus to go up

The number of 4G base stations will be raised in Belarus, BelTA learned from Belarusian Information Technologies and Communications Minister Sergei Popkov during the National Youth Internet Forum on 4 April.

The first phase of the 4G technology rollout was successfully implemented in December 2015. At present as many as 150 base stations in Minsk take care of the LTE Advanced network operation. In the future the 4G technology will rely on 1,500 base stations across the country, said Sergei Popkov. Thus, entire Minsk, all the oblast capitals and a number of major district capitals will enjoy access to this technology.

The official also noted that the fiber-to-the-home technology GPON is also developing in Belarus. The technology will have as many as one million subscribers by the end of the year. In line with the digital economy development program the number will be increased to 2.5 million by 2020. The technology will be available in all multiple-occupancy buildings.

At present 2.9 million people in Belarus use broadband Internet access.

The National Youth Internet Forum gathered over 100 leaders of youth Internet communities of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM), beginner bloggers, and web journalists. They were offered master classes at various platforms, including at premises of the Belarusian Telegraph Agency. Foresight discussions with prominent reporters and Internet marketing specialists were also part of the program.

Finalists of the national youth contest 100 Ideas for Belarus presented their IT projects.
