Belarus in favor of competent dialogue of experts about nuclear power plant construction

Belarus is in favor of a competent dialogue between experts about the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The statement was made by Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a number of foreign diplomats visited the construction site on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

Dmitry Mironchik said: “We have been consistently demonstrating our openness, transparency, and readiness for a dialogue, first of all, a dialogue between experts. We believe if experts are the ones to have a competent dialogue, the results will definitely be in favor of our project and its further implementation.”

Dmitry Mironchik noted that, unfortunately, representatives of the Lithuanian embassy refused to go on the fact-finding tour at the very last moment although initially they confirmed they would do it. “There are no Lithuanian reporters here today either, although we have invited them and have even accredited representatives of a Lithuanian news agency,” pointed out the official. “But today and in the future we are ready to provide all the necessary information to our neighbors and other countries, which are interested in it.”

About 25 diplomats, who are accredited in Belarus, came to visit the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant on 26 May. The number includes heads of diplomatic missions and charges d’affaires. In particular, ambassadors of Russia, the UAE, Palestine, the UK, Turkey, Germany, Ukraine, Serbia, Romania, and Turkmenistan are getting familiar with the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction progress. Diplomats from Slovakia, Czechia, Poland, Japan, Hungary, the USA, and Netherlands also came to Ostrovets.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a new-generation nuclear power plant with two VVER-1200 type reactors (1,200MW each) 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
