Expert: Future of the nuclear energy industry belongs to the fast reactor technology

03.11.2016
Power, one of the most influential and respected international magazines focusing on power engineering, has released results of the annual contest Power Awards. The fourth power-generating unit of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant that uses a fast neutron reactor BN-800 was a winner in the Top Plants nomination. Selecting the winner, the magazine took into account the ability of the power-generating unit to handle a number of tasks, in particular, electricity generation, plutonium processing, transuranic waste processing, and isotope production. The panel of judges also mentioned the special role the reactor plays in implementing the Russian policy of closing the nuclear fuel cycle, increasing the production of nuclear fuel, expanding the nuclear park, and reducing nuclear waste. The Top Plants nomination is meant to single out the most promising and innovation-intensive projects that determine the development vector of the entire power-engineering industry. The Power magazine editors get to choose the winner.

According to Ivan Andriyevsky, Chairman of the Board of 2K Engineering Company, one can say that this technology is the future of nuclear energy industry instead of the thermal reactors, which are so popular today.

A fast neutron reactor relies on a closed nuclear fuel cycle technology. Instead of being processed and stored, its spent fuel is used to make new fuel, which is fed back into the reactor. The technology of fast neutron reactors allows using this fuel as part of the energy generation process. Thermal reactors cannot do that.
