IAEA: Necessary safety aspects adequately reflected in Belarus NPP design

08.06.2017
The design of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) takes into due account all the aspects of safety, including external events, said the IAEA experts who carried out a Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

“The team of IAEA experts concluded that when choosing the site and design for the BelNPP, the Belarusian side took into due account all the aspects of safety, including external events. They added that the necessary measures were taken to address challenges related to external events in light of lessons from the Fukushima Daiichi accident,” the press service said.

The Energy Ministry noted that the IAEA conducted a SEED mission at the site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant at the invitation of the Belarusian government from 16 to 20 January 2017.

“The main aim of the SEED mission in Belarus was to evaluate the plant’s design parameters in terms of external hazards, including natural forces (floods, severe weather, earthquakes, and extreme temperatures) and human-induced hazards (aviation accidents, off-site explosions, external fires, emission of explosive or toxic clouds, electromagnetic interference, and failure of artificial water retaining structures, for instance, dams). The experts were to find out whether all the necessary aspects of security pertaining to the BelNPP were taken into due account in accordance with the relevant IAEA standards,” the press service said.

The SEED team concluded that the site and external events design review was conducted in compliance with the established criteria; the plant’s design parameters accounted for site-specific external hazards; the hazard monitoring programs were adequate and properly reflected in the safety analysis report; adequate measures were taken to address challenges related to external events in light of lessons from the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

The report of the IAEA experts is available on the website of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.
