IAEA: Nuclear security improved immensely in post-Fukushima period

The security level of the nuclear industry has increased considerably after the Fukushima disaster, Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has said at the international high-level conference “Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century” in Russia’s Saint Petersburg on 27 June, BelTA has learnt.

“The Fukushima lessons were learnt, so today the nuclear industry, worldwide, is much safer than it used to be before the accident. Nevertheless, we should not be complacent. We should maintain an unwavering focus on security,” the IAEA chief underlined.

In his words, it is clear today that many countries have plans to make nuclear energy an important part of their energy balance. “Nuclear energy can be helpful in many areas, including in enhancing energy security, easing dependence on fluctuations of energy prices, combating climate change and promoting economic growth. One of the major tasks of the IAEA is to make sure the nuclear energy will not be used to produce nuclear weapons,” Yukiya Amano said.
