Haverkamp: Belarus has a right to make its own choices in nuclear energy

10.10.2016
Belarus has a right to make its own choices regarding the construction of the nuclear power plant, Director of the German Energy Agency (Dena) Kristina Haverkamp told the media on the sidelines of the fifth Belarusian-German Energy Forum in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Kristina Haverkamp noted that nuclear energy is more “climate neutral” than gas or coal. “Every state is entitled to make its own decisions regarding this issue depending on its national interests and preferences, economic needs,” she said.

The head of the German Energy Agency noted that it would be logical if Lithuanians commented on Lithuania's position. As regards Germany, the country will totally give up on nuclear energy by 2022. This decision was taken following the incident at Fukushima, and was supported by the majority of German citizens.

As for the development of renewable energy, Kristina Haverkamp noted that this path is easier for the countries with high GDP. “Given this, we cannot but welcome the efforts of Belarus in terms of renewable energy and the country’s intent to increase the share of renewables up to 6% by 2020,” she said.
