Opinion: Safety of a nuclear power plant depends heavily on personnel training

The safety of a nuclear power plant depends a lot on how personnel are trained. The opinion was voiced by Nikolai Grusha, head of the division in charge of interacting with government agencies and organizations in the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, before the roundtable session on the 60th anniversary of the IAEA establishment and nuclear energy as a sustainable development factor in Vienna, BelTA has learned.

Nikolai Grusha said: “The safety of the future nuclear power plant depends not only on the power plant’s design. How personnel are trained is also important since a nuclear power plant is something not to be taken lightly. Personnel of construction and installation companies need to be highly qualified as well. The requirement is observed in Belarus.”

The expert reminded that a government program on training nuclear power plant personnel in 2008-2020 had been adopted in Belarus. Specialists have been trained within the framework of the program and are now employed by the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, by the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry, and the United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny.

According to Nikolai Grusha, it is also important to have equipment for the nuclear power plant made under the oversight of the customer, the general contractor, and the regulatory agency (the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department). The latter is supposed to verify the quality of the equipment at the manufacturer’s site.
