Rachkov: The European Parliament doesn’t want to objectively evaluate the Belarusian nuclear power plant

The European Parliament’s resolution on the Belarusian nuclear power plant has once again demonstrated the unwillingness of European MPs to objectively evaluate the Belarusian nuclear power plant as an international project. The statement was made by Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rachkov, the press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament told BelTA.

The senator said: “Without waiting to hear conclusions of the team of European regulators about the safety measures the nuclear power plant is implementing, the European MPs took the liberty of including demonstrably false information into the resolution thus replacing a competent opinion of the relevant international and European institutions – the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG). Without any reasons the European MPs assumed the right to pronounce judgment on complicated technical matters in this rather specialized sphere.”

In his words, as it intentionally politicizes the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the European Parliament fails to see the key thing – with its persistent actions Belarus demonstrates its adherence to the policy of an open and professional dialogue with all the interested countries and specialized organizations in order to ensure global nuclear safety as a whole and the stable operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in particular. “I am convinced that the development of the nuclear energy industry in Belarus will make a considerable contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and respectively to the implementation of the Paris Agreement,” the senator added.
