Rosatom expands its geographical presence with a project in Bolivia

02.11.2015
Russia will help Bolivia build its nuclear technology research center, Bolivia President Evo Morales said. In his words, with the technological support of Russia the center will be built within four years. The center will cost nearly $300 million. According to the Bolivian President, Russian experts will arrive in the country in the near future to take part in the implementation of the project. The start of the project is slated for Q1 2016. The center will be built in the city of El Alto.

Candidate of Economic Sciences, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Engineering Company 2K Ivan Andriyevsky told media that there are only three countries in South America that have nuclear power plants. These are Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. Nuclear power accounts for nearly 2% of energy generated in South America. At the same time the region is considered a rapidly developing one. South America is seen as a promising market for the nuclear power industry.

Thus, any contacts in the region are important for Rosatom. In recent years, the Russian corporation has already had talks on cooperation with Argentina and Venezuela. Now some contacts have been established with Bolivia. This fits into the strategy of Rosatom which is expanding its geographical presence.

Of course, today South America does not look a perfect place for launching investment projects. Many countries are experiencing serious problems in the region in connection with the overall difficult macroeconomic situation in the world. However, there is an end to any crisis. There are no doubts about the economic potential of South America. Therefore, given that nuclear power means long-term projects, the advancement to the Latin American markets will bear well for the development of Rosatom.
