The IAEA should maintain its status of a professional and non-political organization

26.09.2016
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should maintain its status of a professional and non-political organization, Rosatom Director General Sergei Kiriyenko said during the 60th annual session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on 26 September, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Kiriyenko stressed that Rosatom rests its cooperation with partner countries on the IAEA norms and rules. “With more countries launching their nuclear energy development programs, the IAEA role increases objectively. Russia upholds the following position: the IAEA plays the leading role in the development of the world’s nuclear energy. It is important for the IAEA to keep its status of a professional and non-political technical organization,” he said.

Nuclear energy is a compulsory condition of low-carbon balance. “It gives a long-term price guarantee and stable base-load demand in the electric power industry, without CO2 generation. Another advantage of nuclear energy is independence from climatic factors and geographical location,” Sergei Kiriyenko noted. Besides, the development of nuclear energy is a real contribution to the implementation of the decisions of the Paris Climate Change Summit.

The 60th annual session of the IAEA General Conference opened in Vienna on 26 September. Partaking in it are delegations from more than 160 countries, including the delegation from Belarus led by Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk. The Belarusian delegation is expected to hold meetings with the IAEA Deputy Directors General, representatives of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA), the delegation of the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostekhnadzor) and others.
