What is done with radioactive waste at nuclear stations?

Radioactive waste is generated in the course of normal, routine operation of nuclear power plants. There is nothing extraordinary about radioactive waste.

The operation of any chemical industry enterprise is accompanied by waste. However, while general chemical industry waste (which is often quite toxic) can be stored in the open air, radioactive waste is thoroughly isolated and stored in containers or special tanks.

Nuclear power plants themselves have facilities to store radioactive waste and process it. The most popular way of processing liquid nuclear waste is vaporization for the sake of reducing waste volume. Cementing is the second most popular choice. Pressing is used for solid radioactive waste.
