Belarus’ universities may start teaching new technical majors

MINSK, 14 August (BelTA) – Belarusian universities and vocational schools may start teaching new technical majors, Belarus’ Education Minister Mikhail Zhuravkov said as he attended the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in Sao Paulo. A Belarusian team is taking part in the competition, BelTA has learned.

The minister noted that many professions presented at the championship are still not taught in Belarus, neither at universities nor at vocational schools. Mikhail Zhuravkov will meet with rectors of Belarusian universities to discuss the possibility of developing new technical majors. The minister pointed out that it is necessary to stop teaching majors that are in little demand and to introduce new ones. “Those involved in the development of educational programs will work on this,” Mikhail Zhuravkov noted.

The minister attended the WorldSkills Competition 2015 and said he was overwhelmed with emotions. “Our team are doing their best to fulfill the tasks,” Mikhail Zhuravkov noted. He believes it is very important that Belarusian experts take part in this international event. If they share their international experience and knowledge with colleagues, it may help improve the Belarusian system of professional education. 

As was reported by BelTA, a Belarusian team is taking part in the prestigious competition of young professionals WorldSkills International for the first time. Brazilian Sao Paulo is hosting the international forum from 11 through 16 August. This year’s edition of WorldSkills International gathered over 1,200 participants from 63 countries competing in 50 skills.

Belarus is represented in 15 skills such as automobile technologies, mechatronics, mobile robotics, electronics, cooking, confectionery, fashion design, and others.
