Young biologists, physicists and information scientists from Belarus won 14 medals at international academic competitions, BelTA learnt from the Education Ministry.
The Indonesian city of Bali hosted the 25th International Biology Olympiad where Belarusian representatives clinched one silver and two bronze medals. Partaking in the competition were 238 representatives of 61 countries.
The Olympiad comprised two exams, which focused on the skills in dealing with biological problems and experiment.
Astana, Kazakhstan played host to the 45th International Physics Olympiad. Belarus was represented by five students of the educational establishments of Minsk, Mogilev, Soligorsk and the BGU Lyceum. Four of them won silver medals, with the fifth receiving honorable mention.
These are annual competitions in physics among school senior students. They have been held since 1967 to acknowledge the increasing importance of physics in every sphere of science and technology, general educational development of young people as well as with an aim to develop international relations in the issues of school education in physics. Partaking in the competition were nearly 400 school students from 86 countries. The Olympiad comprises theoretical and experimental exams. The next Olympiad will take place in India in 2015.
In late July Vietnam’s Hanoi hosted the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad. Partaking in the academic competition were 193 participants from 75 countries. Belarus was represented by four students who won three silver and one bronze medals.
The first such Olympiad was held in Prague, the Czech Republic in 1968. Its major objective is to increase the interest of schools students to the chemical science worldwide. Each delegation consists of up to four students and two mentors. The next competition will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The 26th International Olympiad in Informatics was held in Taiwan in late July. Partaking in this year’s competition were school students from 82 countries. The Belarusian team won one silver and two bronze medals.
