Belarusian scientists will take part in improving the Large Hadron Collider. The information was released by Valentin Orlovich, Chairman of the Scientific Board of the Belarusian National Fund for Fundamental Research. Valentin Orlovich took part in the joint session of the scientific board and the board of trustees of the fund on 16 April.
According to the source, Belarusian scientists will take part in improving the particle accelerator and in working out new theoretical approaches to describing physical processes and forecasting them.
The charged particle accelerator has been shut down for modernization that will take about two years. After that the LHC will operate at its full capacity.
Belarusian science has achieved serious results in the last few years. Belarusian scientists have contributed to the discovery of the Higgs particle. Among the 19 Belarusian co-authors of the discovery 11 ones are grant receivers of the Belarusian National Fund for Fundamental Research.
Belarusian researchers have also won international recognition for developing the branch of science known as nanoelectromagnetism. The term has been coined by Belarusian scientists. Relevant researches are aimed at dealing with fundamental and applied tasks, including the creation of new functional materials for radio electronics, optical electronics, and photonics.
In 2012 the Belarusian National Fund for Fundamental Research backed 1,250 projects. The same number of projects will get financial support this year. In 2013 the volume of funding of the Fund will be raised by 60%. “The works cover all the promising avenues from physics to humanities,” remarked the chairman of the scientific board.
The United Informatics Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus together with the Belarusian State University and Ukrainian scientists have created the scientific foundation for the satellite monitoring of the vegetable cover of Belarus, including methods for high-precision calibration of space equipment and spatial-temporal visualization of information about the state of agricultural crops, the development and consequences of emergencies (drought, fires, floods and so on). The information is important for the Agriculture and Food Ministry, the Emergencies Ministry, insurance companies and other organizations.
