Belarusian, Russian scientists to make lactoferrin medications for premature babies

24.11.2015
Belarusian and Russian scientists intend to make lactoferrin medications for premature babies, BelTA learned from Yelena Sadchikova, Deputy Director of the Gene Biology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, during the expert and media forum and seminar “Development vectors of the scientific environment in the Union State. New ideas and people” in Moscow on 24 November.

The work on producing lactoferrin protein has been going on for a long time. Two relevant programs of the Union State of Belarus and Russia have been completed already. A new Union State program is in development to make products based on lactoferrin. The new program will draw heavily from results of the first two programs. The production of medications for nurturing premature babies looks promising.

According to Yelena Sadchikova, the work on making medications based on lactoferrin has already begun. For instance, a mouth wash solution with an antibacterial effect has been made already. On the whole, lactoferrin-based medications can be used in dentistry, gynecology, gastroenterology, and dermatology, she noted.

Human lactoferrin is a unique research product made by Belarusian and Russian scientists. It is unparalleled in the world. The implementation of the two Union State program resulted in technologies and a test enterprise to make highly effective and biologically safe preparations based on human lactoferrin extracted from goat milk. The physical and chemical qualities of transgenic goat milk lactoferrin are identical to those of human breast milk. This protein increases the resistance of human bodies to diseases. Apart from bactericidal qualities lactoferrin demonstrates anti-inflammatory, detoxing, antioxidative and antitumoral qualities.

The expert and media forum and seminar “Development vectors of the scientific environment in the Union State. New ideas and people” is scheduled to take place in Moscow on 24-25 November. The purpose of the event is to discuss the most topical matters in scientific cooperation between Belarus and Russia and to draw attention to the information component in developing Belarusian and Russian science.
