Belarusian scientists ready for new Large Hadron Collider projects

Belarusian scientists are discussing the possibility of their taking part in new projects involving the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), BelTA learned from Sergei Kilin, Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), before the session of the committee of plenipotentiary representatives of the governments of the member states of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Minsk on 19 November.
Sergei Kilin noted: “It is important for us to see new projects, to which Belarus can contribute not only science but technologies. For our scientists it means new projects not only in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research but also the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). CERN representatives have come to Minsk, too. They are going to discuss new projects involving the Large Hadron Collider.” In his words, at present Belarusian science works on several areas: high-energy physics, solid state physics, including microelectronics, and nanotechnologies.
In turn, Viktor Matveyev, Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that cooperation between the institute and Belarusian scientists have always developed fast. For instance, together with CERN they have created a unique installation, which, in particular, is credited with the discovery of the Higgs boson. “The contribution of Belarusian scientists and engineers is huge. They have created components for large installations that were crucial to success of the entire experiment,” he summed up.
