Belarusians win two medals at International Biology Olympiad

Eleventh-grade student of the Lyceum of the Belarusian State University (BSU) Tatyana Skugarevskaya has won a silver medal at the 25th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2014), Yekaterina Dragunova from Mogilev School No. 15 got a bronze medal, and Margarita Kurban from the BSU Lyceum got an honorable mention, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Education Ministry.
The International Biology Olympiad took place on the island of Bali, Indonesia, on 6-13 July. In line with an established tradition, the Belarusian team consisted of the winners of the national Olympiad. Several preliminary stages were held nationwide to choose the best of the best to represent Belarus at the international Olympiad. All the winners of international Olympiads have substantial preferences while submitting their applications to universities. The press service informed that the Belarusian team performed well in the theoretical and practical exams. The theoretical examination contained the topics set out in the IBO rules and syllabus. The topics of the practical exam covered Cell and Molecular Biology, Plant Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Physiology and Systematics, Ecology and Ethology.
This year the Belarusian team was led by Assistant Professor of the Human and Animal Physiology Sub-Department Dmitry Sandakov and teacher of the BSU Lyceum Vasily Pankratov.
The International Biology Olympiad was organized by the Bandung Institute of Technology (Indonesia). This year the competition brought together 239 contestants from 61 countries.
