Development of Belarusian Internet domain zone .бел noted

18.05.2016
The Cyrillic Internet domain zone .бел successfully grows, BelTA learned from Mikhail Yakushev, ICANN Vice President for relations with Russia, CIS, and Eastern Europe, on 17 May.

“The Internet domain zone .бел has been developing very successfully in Belarus since September 2015,” said the ICANN official.

Mikhail Yakushev remarked that it would be a good idea to introduce Belarusian-language email addresses for the sake of more successful adoption of national languages in the World Wide Web. However, using the @ symbol is a problem since it is not part of the Cyrillic locale. The resolution of the problem involves interests of many internationally recognized companies.

However, the ICANN representative said he hopes that the problem will be resolved. He also spoke in favor of unifying Internet terminology.

According to Mikhail Yakushev, there are about 5 million Internet users across the globe. Over 300 million domain names have been registered.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the private sector, non-profit corporation created in 1998 to assume responsibility for IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions.
