Fourth mobile carrier in Belarus ‘a risky proposition’

Setting up a fourth mobile carrier in Belarus is a commercially risky proposition. The opinion was voiced by Dmitry Shedko, First Deputy Information Technologies and Communications Minister of Belarus, at the roundtable session held in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on 25 June to discuss the development of the national telecommunication market, BelTA has learned.
“There are 12 radio frequency channels in Belarus at present. Theoretically speaking, every mobile carrier has three of them so it is possible to use the remaining three channels to create a fourth mobile carrier,” remarked the official.
The First Deputy Information Technologies and Communications Minister drew attention to the economic effectiveness of the project. “In my opinion, the fourth mobile carrier is a commercially risky proposition. I for one would not invest in it,” he said.
