MINSK, 8 January (BelTA) – Personnel of the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition carried out an emergency operation by working round-the-clock to move mixed cargo and the expedition’s personnel from the research vessel Akademik Fedorov to the field base Mount Vechernyaya by air on 5-7 January 2024. Chief of the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition Aleksei Gaidashov submitted the completion report, the press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) told BelTA.

Aleksei Gaidashov said: “Freight transportation by air was complicated by the difficult ice situation and by the long flights the helicopter had to carry out. As part of the operation as much as 37 tonnes of mixed cargo of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition was moved from the research vessel Akademik Fedorov to the field base Mount Vechernyaya. The cargo included parts of a foundation platform for a new module of the Belarusian Antarctic station, consumables and spare parts for machines and equipment, food, and research equipment. The mixed cargo was delivered without damage and losses. The success was facilitated by detailed planning of the work and smooth professional interaction between personnel of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, members of the crew of the research vessel and the air detachment.”

The chief of the 16th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition said that instruments for scientific observations, life support systems, and transportation and communication solutions operate in normal mode. The expedition personnel continue carrying out research programs approved by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, plans of technical work and nature conservation measures. The field base Mount Vechernyaya has the necessary reserves of fuel, food, and medications.

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus also stressed that the research vessel Akademik Fedorov maintains stable satellite communication with foreign Antarctic stations and international coordination centers. The personnel of the Belarusian expedition are in good health.
