NASB to launch 3D printer manufacturing program

10.09.2014
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus intends to start implementing a program designed to create 3D printers in the next five-year period, BelTA learned from Sergei Chizhik, First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, on 10 September.

According to Sergei Chizhik, this year scientists will determine the main areas of work in this field. The 3D printer creation program is supposed to be worked out and implemented in the next five-year period. The implementation of individual projects may begin as early as 2015. “The program is supposed to secure a breakthrough. We have every chance of taking the lead. The creation of better quality and affordable materials to make ready-made products is also important,” said the official.

The R&D cluster to make 3D printers is supposed to include Belarusian companies like OAO Planar, the V.A. Belyi Metal Polymer Institute, the Powder Metallurgy Institute, and the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The cluster is likely to comprise ten enterprises, said the scientist. In his words, the form of the cluster, the terms for enterprises to join the cluster, and financial matters have yet to be determined.

The representative of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus said that in Belarus 3D printing may focus on electromechanical microsystems — sensors and small volume solutions. The printers can also be used to build homes out of concrete mixtures and create complicated components out of powdered metals. “We welcome proposals from scientists regarding possible 3D printing applications,” said the First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
