MINSK, 12 October (BelTA) – There are no reasons to fear that artificial intelligence will become superior to human intelligence. Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov made the statement on the sidelines of the 2nd IT Academgrad forum and exhibition Artificial Intelligence in Belarus, BelTA has learned. The forum and the exhibition are timed to the 95th anniversary since the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was founded.

Artificial intelligence is one of the most rapidly developing areas of science in the world. This area of science develops actively in Belarus, too. Vladimir Gusakov said: “Artificial intelligence can be used virtually in all branches of the economy. It cannot be any other way because the world is changing. It is impossible to imagine that people can live a life worth living without modern technologies. We believe that the rate of advance will be even faster later on. It is difficult to imagine it now. Artificial intelligence can already be used to design anything you want. Artificial intelligence lies at the heart of many technical systems and the organization of unmanned manufacturing. AI helps print products, including foods, and any most complicated goods. You just have to come up with a program. AI can create works of art: music, poetry, and so on.”

“But there are no reasons to believe that artificial intelligence will become superior to human intelligence because programs are written by humans. When people speculate that artificial intelligence will win and humans will be enslaved by AI, I can say that everything will depend on what program we will use the AI to run. I think artificial intelligence has to and will serve for the benefit of mankind,” the chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences said.

An exhibition of prominent Belarusian R&D projects in the area of artificial intelligence and robot technology has been organized as part of the forum. About 50 Belarusian organizations are taking part in the forum and demonstrate their accomplishments in the area of artificial intelligence at the expo. Those are scientific research organizations that pursue research in the area of artificial intelligence applications, representatives of education institutions, and private companies. A total of over 100 projects are on display, including the national AI platform BELAI.BY and an AI-powered voice assistant that speaks Belarusian.

Winners of the open contest Belarus Artificial Intelligence Leaders were awarded on 12 October. It was the first time such a contest had been organized.
