Atomexpo 2016 in Moscow draws over 5,000 visitors

02.06.2016
The eighth international forum Atomexpo 2016 held in Moscow from 30 May to 1 June drew over 5,000 visitors, BelTA learned from the Atomexpo press service.

Two major plenary sessions “Nuclear power as a basis for zero carbon energy balance” and “The future of nuclear energy. New players” were held as part of the international forum. Top managers of big Russian and foreign companies and representatives of public and professional associations discussed the role of nuclear power in the future low carbon energy balance.

Apart from the plenary sessions, the program of the international forum featured twelve roundtable discussions, such as “Life cycle management. From construction of nuclear power stations to managing the corresponding data throughout the life cycle”, “The world on the threshold of nuclear program development: global challenges and Rosatom’s solutions”, and others.

The last day of the forum was devoted to the youth. School and university students were invited to take part in contests and quizzes. There was a Factory of Rosatom Processes that demonstrated different interactive learning formats. Besides, university students competed in a contest of presentations “Nuclear power as a basis for zero carbon energy balance”.

This year’s edition of the forum gathered 508 participants from 55 countries, which is a record number for Atomexpo. Bolivia, Guatemala, Greece, Zimbabwe and Namibia debuted at the 2016 forum. The expo held as part of the forum featured stands of 99 Russian and foreign companies.

The state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) was among the exhibitors. Its stand displayed video and photo materials telling about the history of the BelNPP construction project, the progress made in 2015 and the goals for 2016. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The general contract for building the nuclear power plant stipulates that the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.

More than 30 agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed between different countries and companies during Atomexpo 2016. The agreement on peaceful uses of nuclear energy between Kenya and Tanzania was one of them. Rosatom Director General Sergei Kiriyenko noted that the agreements signed in Moscow have an estimated value of $10 billion. The head of Rosatom Corporation pointed out that the modern nuclear power industry guarantees stable energy prices and makes an immense contribution to cutting CO2 emissions. Sergei Kiriyenko cited the International Energy Agency which estimates that today nuclear power plants help avoid the release of 56 gigatonnes of CO2. “This is why even those countries that have sufficient hydrocarbon resources or enjoy 365 sunny days a year decide to build nuclear power plants,” he stressed.
