Austria interested in sharing nuclear, radiation safety information with Belarus

MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – Top officials of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) met with Charge d'Affaires of Austria in Belarus Ronald Helmut Sturm. The meeting was organized upon Austria’s request, BelTA has learned.

During the meeting matters concerning the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant were raised as well as consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, the safety and operation of the Polesie State Radioecological Reserve, results of the evaluation missions sent by the International Atomic Energy Agency to Belarus and a peer review held within the framework of stress tests of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The realization of practical steps as a result of these missions was discussed.

Gosatomnadzor Head Olga Lugovskaya stressed that as a nuclear and radiation safety regulatory body the department remains open to all partners, who are interested in working with Belarus. She mentioned the importance of exchanging information in the bilateral format and the multilateral format as a contribution to the overall improvement of safety and an element of the global nuclear safety regime.

In turn, Ronald Helmut Sturm suggested intensifying Belarusian-Austrian cooperation in the field of sharing information about the state of nuclear and radiation safety. He also suggested holding a bilateral meeting this year. In addition to taking part in the meeting the Belarusian delegation could participate in international events in the IEAE headquarters.
