As part of preparations for the IIHF World Championship due in Minsk in 2014, Belarus is hosting a consultative mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for nuclear and radiation safety assessment of key sports venues, BelTA learned from the nuclear and radiation safety department at the Emergencies Ministry of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor).
“Ensuring radiation safety is an integral part of security measures during such major events as world championships, and implies the strengthening of radiation control at the customs border of the host country, radiation control in crowded places, prevention of illicit trafficking of ionizing radiation sources and other issues. These measures are done in accordance with the IAEA recommendations. The current mission is one of the measures on the part of the IAEA to assist Belarus in preparation for the 2014 IIHF World Championship in 214,” Gosatomnadzor said.
IAEA experts will work in Belarus until 31 October. They will attend a meeting at the Emergencies Ministry, the authorized government body in charge of nuclear and radiation safety. The experts will visit Minsk National Airport, Minsk Arena multifunctional cultural and sports facility, Chizhovka Arena sports and entertainment complex, and will meet with representatives of the Belarusian authorities and organizations involved in ensuring security during the world championship.
