Belarus to choose space flight candidates by mid-June

BLAGOVESHCHENSK, 13 April (BelTA) – Belarus will put together a list of possible candidates for a space flight by mid-June, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov.

The official said the list will be compiled soon, at some point before 15 June. One main candidate and one backup candidate will be selected. Russia will take care of the main costs. “While we will present our program and finance it,” Vladimir Gusakov said.

In turn, Director General of the Russian space agency Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin noted that the Belarusian cosmonaut will be trained in Russia and will fly into outer space as part of a federal space program. “It is not charity. It is not one brotherly country providing financial aid to another brotherly country. The situation is totally different. It has been decided that a citizen of the Republic of Belarus will become part of Roscosmos’ cosmonaut corps. Belarus’ representative will not be a foreigner with someone paying us for launching him or her into space. These cosmonauts will become ours, they will become common cosmonauts. It is a revolutionary decision. It is cool I believe,” he stressed.

BelTA reported earlier that Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and President of Russia Vladimir Putin visited the Vostochny Cosmodrome on 12 April. Cooperation in space exploration was discussed among other things. After the two heads of state left, a joint business program continued in the building of the Blagoveshchensk airport. Details of the agreements that had been reached were discussed late into the night.
