Belarus to import less electricity from Russia in 2016

In 2016 Belarus will import 11% less electricity from Russia. A total of 2.5 billion kWh will be imported from Russia, BelTA learned from Zhanna Zenkevich, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.
According to the source, the Belarusian and Russian sides have reached an agreement that Belarus will get the guaranteed amount of electricity to the tune of 2.5 billion kWh in 2016. Electricity will be supplied on terms, which are economically advantageous for Belarus, explained the official.
In her words, taking into account the commissioning of new highly effective power-generating installations the Energy Ministry’s electricity import strategy is aimed at reducing import from abroad. In 2012 Belarus imported 7.9 billion kWh of electricity. In 2013 the figure dropped to 6.7 billion kWh. The figure went down to 3.8 billion kWh in 2014. In 2015 Belarus imported 2.8 billion kWh.
