The issues of nuclear and radiation security were discussed at the international conference in Gomel, BelTA learnt from the Emergencies Ministry of Belarus.
The event attended by scientists and specialists from Belarus, Russia, Japan and Slovakia took place at the Institute of Radiology of the Emergencies Ministry of Belarus.
“The forum is aimed at sharing experience and working out proposals to promote adoption of new managerial decisions of those who is responsible for the safety of people. in order to make the right decision one needs reliable information. This is our area of responsibility,” Chairman of the Presidium of the Gomel subsidiary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences Yuri Pleskachevsky said at the conference. “The Belarusian experience in this area is invaluable. The advances we have reached over the past 2 years are unique, and we are ready to share them. You can find all necessary information on our websites,” he added.
The conference “Nuclear and Radiation Security: Lessons of Chernobyl and Fukushima” highlighted the reasons for the accidents at the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants, their consequences. The participants of the conference named defects in the emergency regulation system in part of radiation security.
The participants of the event took stock of the lessons learnt from radiation accidents in such issues as the importance of the proper and timely assessment of an emergency threat, adjusted plans for emergency response, selection and training of the personnel. The conference also touched upon further coordination of actions, cooperation and exchange of information between the member states.
