10.05.2022
MINSK, 10 May (BelTA) – Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich has explained what will happen to spent nuclear fuel generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA has learned.

According to Viktor Karankevich, 25% of the fuel rod arrays will be extracted from the reactor assembly and put inside a cooling pond. The pond is in the reactor building. The spent nuclear fuel will stay as fuel rod arrays for about 8-10 years. It will cool down and will lose its radioactivity. Later on the fuel will be transported in special containers by rail to the Russian Federation for processing.

In his words, it will happen at some point in 2023. After that the fuel, which will be delivered to TVEL Fuel Company in the Russian Federation, will be processed. Products generated by processing the spent nuclear fuel will be transported back to Belarus. It will be done in 2050, the Belarusian energy minister said.
