IAEA Deputy Directors General Mikhail Chudakov and Juan Carlos Lentijo have plans to visit the site of Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) in 2017. The relevant agreement was reached as a result of the work of the Belarusian delegation at the 60th annual session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, BelTA has learned.
The head of the Belarusian delegation, Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk, said that he met with the IAEA Deputy Directors General to discuss matters related to the areas of their focus and tell them about the progress in the construction of the BelNPP. The parties also talked about safety issues and the organization of IAEA missions, including the IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission that will start in Belarus on 2 October.
Mikhail Mikhadyuk invited Mikhail Chudakov and Juan Carlos Lentijo to visit Belarus. Despite their busy schedules, the IAEA Deputy Directors General expressed their readiness to pay a visit to Belarus to assess progress in the BelNPP project.
The Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister also had a brief informal meeting with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano. The head of the IAEA thanked the Belarusian side for the organization of his visit to Belarus in spring 2016. He stressed that the IAEA plans to continue its fruitful cooperation with Belarus within the framework of the BelNPP project.
Besides, Mikhail Mikhadyuk had a working meeting with Gerassimos Thomas, Deputy Director General in the Directorate-General for Energy at the European Commission, who visited Belarus on 19 and 20 September. “We discussed his visit to Belarus. Special attention was paid to the stress tests of the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” the Belarusian official said.
The 60th annual session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna will conclude on 30 September.
