IAEA seminar in Minsk focuses on nuclear, radiation safety legislation

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held a seminar on legislation in the sphere of nuclear and radiation safety in Minsk, BelTA learned from representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry.

The seminar focused on developing legal acts in compliance with IAEA documents. The seminar gathered representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry, technical support agencies of the Emergencies Ministry, the Energy Ministry, the operating company of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the United Nuclear Energy Research Institute Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and other agencies.

IAEA experts from France, Hungary, and Russia arranged presentations and organized practical classes on topics vital for developing the legal base on regulating nuclear and radiation safety.

Participants of the seminar were made familiar with IAEA recommendations, the best practices of Hungary and Russia in the development of regulations on nuclear and radiation safety, in determining priorities for developing the legislation, and in licensing nuclear installations. The experience of arranging and requirements for the external expert evaluation of documents that substantiate nuclear and radiation safety was discussed.

At the end of the seminar the participants spoke highly of the information presented by the IAEA experts and the information acquired during the discussions. They said they would like to continue studying during similar seminars in 2017.
