MINSK, 15 December (BelTA) – Deputy Director for Science of the A.N. Sevchenko Institute of Applied Physical Problems of the Belarusian State University Yuri Dudchik came to BelTA's press center on 15 December and told reporters how background radiation is monitored in Belarus and what products of the Belarusian State University are used for that.

Yuri Dudchik said: “Our institute has designed the automated background radiation monitoring system that has been commissioned in Belarus. The second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be commissioned soon. Apart from that, there are several nuclear power plants in neighboring countries, this is why it is very important to monitor background radiation. Our institute has designed, made, and commissioned 27 radiation control posts. They are located near nuclear power plants of neighboring countries. Data fed by these posts goes to a decision-making center. This information is available to all citizens of Belarus. Apart from that, we've commissioned 10 radiation control posts, which are located near the Belarusian nuclear power plant.”

The institute also worked to commission a radiation monitoring system of over 30 stations in the Polesie radiation and ecology reserve. Those stations also feed data to the decision-making center. “We also take care of the maintenance of the equipment we've made and commissioned,” the official added.
