Latest nuclear technologies at AtomExpo Belarus 2014

The latest technologies used to design, build, operate, and keep nuclear power plants safe will be represented at the 6th international nuclear power engineering expo and conference AtomExpo Belarus 2014. The event will take place in Minsk on 1-3 April, the press service of OOO Atomexpo (Russia) told BelTA.

The event will be arranged upon the initiative of the Belarusian Energy Ministry with assistance of the Russian state corporation Rosatom, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Belarusian ministries and agencies.

Participants of Atomexpo Belarus will discuss matters concerning the encouragement of research efforts in nuclear power engineering in Belarus, assistance for forming a system to train nuclear industry personnel in the country.

The main topical sections of the expo include nuclear power plant design and construction, control and management solutions, safe operation of nuclear power plants, mechanical engineering solutions for nuclear power industry, instruments and equipment for building nuclear power plants, nanomaterials and technologies for nuclear power engineering industry, and the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

The business program of the forum includes a science to practice conference focused on prospects of nuclear power development in the Republic of Belarus. Plenary sessions are expected to take place in addition to panel seminars, presentations, roundtable sessions to discuss personnel training for the nuclear energy industry and public awareness.

Construction workers started pouring concrete into the foundation of the facilities that will make up the first power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant at the Ostrovets site in November 2013. The Belarusian nuclear power plant will boast two power-generating units with the total capacity of up to 2,400MW (1,200MW each). The Russian design AES-2006 has been chosen to build the power plant. The design is fully compliant with international standards and IAEA recommendations. The Russian merged company OAO NIAEP – ZAO Atomstroyexport (ASE) is the general designer and the general contractor for building the power plant. The timeline for implementing the project is stipulated by the general contract. The first power-generating unit of the nuclear power plant is scheduled for launch in November 2018.
