More Belarusians support NPP construction

02.04.2013

The number of people opposing the construction of the nuclear power plant in Belarus has been decreasing considerably, laboratory head of the United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny Vyacheslav Kuvshinov told reporters on 2 April, BelTA has learnt.

Over several years the Institute has been studying public attitudes to two energy programs it has been running. “Public sentiments are monitored by the Belarusian State University and the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus,” Vyacheslav Kuvshinov said.

He noted that the studies revealed that the number of people in favor of the NPP construction in Belarus has been on the rise and has exceeded 50% already. The number of staunch opponents of the NPP project is decreasing, Vyacheslav Kuvshinov informed.

According to him, it is very important that the public is informed about the course of the construction project. “If a person knows little about something, he starts doubting and questioning it and eventually comes to oppose it. If a person knows how power is generated and how it is transformed into electricity, he/she has less ground for doubt,” Vyacheslav Kuvshinov said.
