Negotiations to export Belarusian electricity to Poland in progress

24.04.2015

The Belarusian Energy Ministry is working hard on organizing the export of electricity to Poland, BelTA learned from Belarusian First Deputy Energy Minister Leonid Shenets during Atomexpo Belarus 2015.

“Negotiations with Poland are in progress. The process has been stepped up recently and we expect to secure a concerted decision,” said the official. Leonid Shenets remarked that Poland is interested in developing transboundary electric connections.

At present Belarus is unable to transfer electricity to Poland. BelTA earlier quoted Yevgeny Voronov, Director General of the Belarusian national electrical company Belenergo, as saying that Belarusian and Polish specialists were working together to deal with the technical issues involved in creating direct-current lines at the border because the Belarusian and Polish power grids use different electrical current frequencies.

Speaking about trade in electricity on the whole, Leonid Shenets reminded that in 2014 Belarus exported a record high volume of electricity — about 500 million kWh.
