New executive in Russian Atomstroyexport to oversee Belarusian nuclear power plant project

04.11.2016
Vitaly Medyakov has been appointed vice president of the Russian company NIAEP for overseeing the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction project, BelTA has learned. NIAEP is part of the group of companies Atomstroyexport (ASE for short), which is in charge of building nuclear power plants outside Russia.

Vitaly Medyakov was previously in charge of overseeing projects in Russia.

His predecessor — Yuri Pustovoi — oversaw the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in 2012-2016. He was dismissed for medical reasons. Vasily Limarenko, President of the ASE group of companies, spoke in glowing terms about Yuri Pustovoi’s contribution to the Belarusian nuclear power plant project. In his words, the construction site in Belarus is an example to follow as far as the organization of construction processes is concerned. “State-of-the-art project management technologies are employed over there,” said the executive.

The ASE group of companies was established by merging the industry’s leading companies — NIAEP, ASE, Atomenergoproject, and Atomproject — to form the engineering division of the Russian state corporation Rosatom. ASE Group is one of the leaders of the international nuclear power engineering industry and accounts for 31% of the global market for nuclear power plant construction. The share of foreign contracts in the company’s portfolio is close to 80%.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a VVER-1200 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW).
