Nuclear power safety to be discussed at Atomexpo in Minsk

A roundtable discussion Public Acceptance of Nuclear Power will be held in Minsk on 19 April as part of the international expo and conference Atomexpo Belarus, BelTA learned from the Atomexpo press service. 

Its participants will discuss key matters of nuclear power safety, environmental protection and public acceptance, and also the development prospects of nuclear power industry in European countries.

The agenda of the event includes such topics as the dynamics of public opinion on the development of nuclear power in Belarus, organization of radiation control and monitoring of the environment near the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), the place and role of the BelNPP on the energy market of the Baltic states, and Belarus’ accession to the nuclear club. The experts will discuss social and political perception of the BelNPP project, public opinion and development of nuclear power in Finland, and also the social and economic impact of the nuclear power plant construction for Ostrovets District.

Partaking in the roundtable discussion will be Research Associate of the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Yelena Martishchenkova, Deputy Director for Research and Coordination of Promising Projects of the Nuclear Safety Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Rafael Arutyunyan, Professor of Odessa National Polytechnic University Sergei Barbashev, Director of Foreign Policy and Security Research Center of Belarus Sergei Palagin, and others.

The discussion will be moderated by Vladimir Gorin, Deputy Chief Engineer for Personnel Training at the BelNPP, and Igor Pavlovsky, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Russian Regnum News Agency.

The national exhibition center BelExpo in Minsk will play host to the eighth edition of the international expo and conference Atomexpo Belarus from 19 to 21 April. The forum will be held on the initiative of the Energy Ministry of Belarus with the support of the Russian state nuclear energy industry corporation Rosatom. The company Atomexpo takes part in the organization of the event on behalf of Russia.
