MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) – Before a session of the Energy Ministry board Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich talked about how the site for building a radioactive waste storage facility is being selected, BelTA has learned.
Viktor Karankevich said: “The site for placing the national facility for storing radioactive waste has not been determined yet. Districts and territories where the facility may be potentially placed are being analyzed. All the aspects are taken into account such as ecological, economic, social, organizational, and technical ones.”
In his words, the ministries and government agencies concerned are working within the framework of the roadmap on realizing the project. The Belarusian Radioactive Waste Management Organization takes an active part in this work.
The energy minister remarked that the first stage of the radioactive waste storage facility is expected to commission by 2030. Public hearings about the project will be held in Belarus and with neighboring countries before construction work begins.
