Opinion: Lithuania needs cheap electricity from Belarus

11.05.2022
OSTROVETS DISTRICT, 11 May (BelTA) – Lithuania needs cheap electricity from Belarus. The Lithuanian public figure Erika Svencioniene made the statement as she visited the Belarusian nuclear power plant on 11 May, BelTA has learned.

Erika Svencioniene said: “We lack cheap electricity, which we could get from you. It is a reason for our visit here. It is said in our country that all the bridges have been burned. But we hope that relations between our countries will be mended. Cheap electricity is important for the economy and for every one of us.”

She noted she had asked Belarusians about prices for electricity and few had been able to remember the exact figure. “It means that it is not a problem. In Lithuania it is a sore point. Electricity is expensive. We spend a considerable percentage of our earnings on electricity,” she pointed out.

Erika Svencioniene also stressed that economic decisions should not be based on political reasons the way the Lithuanian side acts now. She also said she hopes that Belarus and Lithuania will re-establish cooperation in the sphere of energy industry in the future.
