Reactor of world’s first floating power unit launched in Russia

Rosenergoatom initiated the procedure of physical startup for the reactor of the world’s first floating power unit Academician Lomonosov, TASS learned from Rosenergoatom.


The floating power unit Academician Lomonosov, which is an element of the floating nuclear power plant in Chukotka, is loaded with nuclear fuel in Murmansk. It will be tugged to the Pevek seaport in Chukotka in 2019.


November 2018 will see the beginning of the main phase of startup operations - comprehensive mooring tests of the nuclear power unit, which will continue until next spring. The nuclear power unit will be tested in all modes during tests to confirm all provided characteristics and an opportunity to operate it during 40 years.

The power unit will supply electricity to port towns, oil and gas producing platforms in the open sea. It can also be used as a desalination unit and produce up to 240,000 cubic meters of water per day. The service life of the power unit is 35-40 years.
