Rosatom specialists share radioactive waste management experience with Belarusians

MINSK, 31 August (BelTA) – Experts of the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom have shared their experience regarding radioactive waste management with Belarusian specialists, the press service of the Belarusian Energy Ministry told BelTA.

While on a technical visit to Belarus Rosatom specialists went to the Belarusian nuclear power plant where they were made familiar with the existing infrastructure that handles radioactive waste.

Belarusian and Russian experts held consultations, during which prospects of bilateral interaction in the sphere of management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste were discussed. The Russian colleagues shared their experience of building radioactive waste burial facilities. Approaches to choosing sites for such facilities were discussed.

Results were summed up at the Energy Ministry. Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk remarked that interaction in training personnel how to manage radioactive waste was an important avenue of cooperation.

In turn, First Deputy Head of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) Leonid Dedul stressed that Russian experience has practical benefits for the Belarusian side since a national strategy on managing radioactive waste is in development in the country. The document is supposed to be adopted by the end of the year.
