Russia, India sign agreement to build third and forth power units of Kudankulam NPP

11.12.2014
The agreement was signed to build the third and the forth nuclear power units of the Kudankulam nuclear plant in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Rosatom Director General Sergei Kiriyenko told journalists, TASS has learned.

“According to the plan, we will start concrete pouring in early 2016. The pre-construction works are currently underway. Russian enterprises have started receiving orders for equipment,” Sergei Kiriyenko explained.

He said that Russia will provide a state loan to finance the orders placed with Russian producers.

Russian specialists have been participating in the construction of the Kudankulam NPP in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu since 1998 when the general agreement on the construction of the plant was signed. The project envisages four nuclear power units with the output capacity of 1,000MW each. The second reactor of the Kudankulam NPP was put into operation in June 2014 when the first power unit reached its full capacity.

India expects to build 19 reactors with the total capacity of 17,400MW by 2017. Eight of them will be constructed with the participation of other countries.
