Russia to spend RUB1tn on nuclear energy development by 2015

06.05.2013

Russia intends to develop nuclear power engineering and will spend RUB1 trillion on it by 2015. The statement was made by Mikhail Ulyanov, Director of the Security and Disarmament Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, BelTA has learned.

In his words, reactors are being created in Russia now that can desalt water in addition to generating electricity. “They can become a development instrument for many countries,” said Mikhail Ulyanov.

“Nuclear safety of nuclear power engineering should be enhanced using new technical solutions,” remarked the diplomat. “Therefore, we believe it is necessary to design nuclear power plants using passive and active safeguards. Such designs exist already”. Mikhail Ulyanov pointed out that a new generation of Russian nuclear station designs provides for a double protective reactor shell, passive heat dissipation systems, and a special cooling solution.
