Technical tour to world’s first NPP for ATOMEXPO participants

27.05.2014
A technical tour to Obninskaya NPP for the participants of ATOMEXPO International Forum will take place on June 11, 2014.

The technical tour for the Forum participants will be organized in the year of the 60th NPP's anniversary. During the tour, the participants will visit the Laboratory B (known today as the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation 'Leypunski Institute of Physics and Power Engineering'), a place where fundamentals of Russian nuclear engineering were laid, take a look at the dosimetry control panel, head to the control panel, descend to the reactor hall, where rests the first-ever NPP reactor, called Atom Mirny (Russian for Peaceful Atom) by Kurchatov.

Obninskaya NPP is the world's first industrial nuclear power plant with a power output of 5,000 kW. The plant reactor had 128 fuel channels and 23 control and protection system's channels. A single load was enough to provide for the NPP working at its full output for 80-100 days.

Today, Obninskaya NPP is out of service. After being successfully operated for almost 48 years, its reactor was decommissioned on April 29, 2002. The reactor was shut down due to scientific and technical uselessness of its further operation. Obninskaya NPP is the first shutdown nuclear power plant in Russia.
