Turkish scientist: Nuclear power plants reduce the risk of global warming by 20%

07.02.2013

“Nuclear power plants reduce the risk of global warming, Dr. Halil Kumbur, Professor at Mersin University, Faculty of Environmental Engineering, said at the conference “Energy and Environmental Protection” which recently took place in Mersin, Turkey, report Russian news agencies. The conference was organized by the Association of Entrepreneurs and Public Officials of Mersin Province, the place where Akkuyu, the first Turkish nuclear power plant, shall be built.

Prof. Halil Kumbur made the presentation on the environmental pollution in light of energy deficit in Turkey. Professor emphasized that the amount of carbon dioxide released by nuclear power plants is minuscule in comparison with emissions of thermal power plants. This fact begs the conclusion that the use of nuclear power plants reduces the risk of the global warming by 20%.

Prof. Kumbur illustrated his presentation with the data on the share of nuclear plants in electricity production in some countries. For example, in France nuclear power plants generate 78% of electrical energy and in Slovakia the number is 48%. “The countries which are now in search for the solution to the energy deficit which they might face in the future are making significant investments in the nuclear industry,” stated the scientist. He also added that provided that all safety measures are complied with and are in place, the nuclear power plants with high generating power will make significant contribution to the production of electricity in Turkey.
