MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in the safety of the nuclear power plant under construction more than anyone else. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement after meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevicius on 4 February, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei stressed that Belarus is intent on absolutely openly discussing the matter.

Vladimir Makei noted: “The Belarusian side understands concerns in the Lithuanian society, but would like to point out that our cooperation with the IAEA and the European Union is absolutely transparent. We've voluntarily arranged stress tests, although we didn't have to.”

According to Vladimir Makei, in line with European recommendations Belarus has prepared a national action plan. Considering the lingering concerns the partners demonstrate, the Belarusian side is ready to welcome another European delegation and continue discussing these matters.

Vladimir Makei made it clear that Belarus is extremely interested in the safety of the nuclear power plant under construction.

He also noted that during the talks with his Lithuanian counterpart they had agreed on certain steps to address the concerns, which are present in the Lithuanian society.

“In our opinion, the key thing is to make sure that safety standards are observed during construction and then during the operation of the nuclear power plant,” Vladimir Makei stressed. The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs pointed out that Belarus is still intent on discussing the matter in an open and transparent manner and is ready to work out measures to remove emotional tensions and all the relevant existing issues.
