Belarus, Russia sign spent nuclear fuel management agreement

SOCHI, 21 November (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the management of spent nuclear fuel. The document was signed by Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich and Director General of the Russian state corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev in Sochi on the sidelines of the international forum Atomexpo 2022, BelTA has learned.

The Energy Ministry press service explained the agreement stipulates how spent nuclear fuel will be transported to Russia where it will be temporarily stored and consequently processed as well as how the resulting radioactive waste will be transported back to Belarus.

The signing of the agreement is stipulated by the Union State program on developing the nuclear energy industry.
