Belarus’ strive to enable transparent operation of nuclear power plant stressed

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Belarus does everything to ensure the transparency of the operation of the country’s nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuri Ambrazevich.
A ceremony to place baskets of flowers at the commemorative signs Chernobyl Victims and Hiroshima Peace Stone took place in Minsk’s Peoples’ Friendship Park on 26 April on the occasion of the 36th anniversary since the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Yuri Ambrazevich said: “It is not only a day to commemorate victims of the Chernobyl tragedy but a look into the future. This is why the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets is so seriously viewed by the government. Our state does everything to ensure its transparent operation, including with assistance of international procedures.”
Yuri Ambrazevich stated with regret that not all the countries practice this approach. “Measures to commission nuclear installations at the Ignalina nuclear power plant are of particular concern recently. I’d like to note that Lithuania neglects its liabilities within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency. We expect the country to engage in more serious bilateral cooperation,” the official stressed.
The latest events at nuclear power plants in Ukraine are concerning as well. “Yesterday’s briefing of Russian diplomats in the United Nations Organization regarding the provocations the Ukrainian army is preparing to stage at these installations cannot but worry us. There is no doubt the topic deserves attention both in Belarus and in the international scene,” Yuri Ambrazevich concluded.
