The number of construction workers employed for building the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be increased up to 3,500 people in December, twice as many as the number registered at the beginning of the year, BelTA learned from Andrei Barkun, Deputy Director General of the enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, on 26 November during a media tour organized by the Belarusian Energy Ministry.
“Plans have been made to increase the number of construction workers up to 3,500 people in December. The share of Belarusian construction companies will exceed 85%,” noted the Deputy Director General. About 3,200 workers are now employed at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Andrei Barkun pointed out that a Russian company is taking care of building the reactor compartment, however, the company employs a total of 540 people. Of the total about 150 specialists are local residents while the other specialists are from Russia and Ukraine. The executive said that the average salary paid to the staff is Br8 million.
A housing construction program is being implemented to provide homes to the nuclear power plant personnel. Five houses with the total area of 17,700m2 were commissioned in 2014 to provide homes for over 1,100 people. There are plans to commission three more residential buildings by the end of the year.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build an AES-2006 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The power plant will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The Russian merged company OAO NIAEP – ZAO ASE is the general designer and the general contractor of the project. In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
