MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) – The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) has been connected to the grid, BelTA learned from the press service of the Energy Ministry.

“The first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the grid after the replacement of voltage transformers in the measuring circuits of the generator switch, the testing of thermal power equipment, and necessary measurements,” the press service said.

Connection of the power unit to the grid and the loading procedure were carried out in accordance with the requirements of technological regulations of safe operation, the press service said.

“The reactor of the first unit is currently operating at 40% of its rated capacity. The testing of the systems and equipment of the power unit continues,” the press service noted.

According to the BelNPP construction schedule, the launch of pilot operation of the first power unit is scheduled for December.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant uses the Russian design AES-2006 featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. The plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom is the general contractor.
